Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54.
The actor passed away in his sleep from natural causes, according to a statement released by his family to The Hollywood Reporter. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former co-stars and fans alike, many reflecting on both his on-screen legacy and his off-screen journey.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the statement read. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years.”
In recent years, Brendon had turned his focus toward visual art, finding new creative expression outside of acting. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.”
The statement also acknowledged his personal struggles while emphasizing his outlook in recent years. “While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.”
Brendon’s portrayal of Xander Harris across all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer made him a defining part of the series’ emotional core. As one of Buffy’s earliest allies—alongside Willow Rosenberg—Xander offered humor, vulnerability, and a distinctly human perspective within the show’s supernatural framework.
Following news of his passing, several of his co-stars shared deeply personal tributes.
Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote: “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen…” before adding, “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”
Alyson Hannigan reflected on their long friendship: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP 💔😢”
Charisma Carpenter remembered his warmth and spontaneity, writing, “He was cuddly, funny, silly, self-deprecating, and supremely talented,” adding that working with him “forced me to become a better actor.”
David Boreanaz offered a more reflective note: “There are people you work with and then there are people you share time with Nick was the latter… He carried something real, not perfect, not polished, just real.”
Emma Caulfield shared, “Damn Nicky you made me laugh… Thank you. Love you. Rest in peace old friend.”
Beyond Buffy, Brendon appeared in projects including Psycho Beach Party, Coherence, and Criminal Minds. In 2023, he revealed he had suffered a heart attack and was living with a congenital heart defect, alongside other health challenges.
Still, for many, it is Xander—the loyal, flawed, deeply human friend—that remains his most enduring contribution.
As tributes continue to surface, one sentiment remains consistent: Nicholas Brendon’s presence—both on screen and off—left a lasting impression.
