After nearly two decades together, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are going their separate ways. Just one day after reports surfaced of their split, the Big Little Lies actress officially filed for divorce in Nashville on September 30, citing “irreconcilable differences,” according to court documents obtained by E! News.
The filing marks the end of one of Hollywood’s longest-running marriages, and while the paperwork makes it official, fans are learning the unraveling had already been quietly in motion for months.
Nicole’s filing lists their date of separation as Sept. 30, but documents show that weeks earlier, both Kidman and Urban had already signed off on a permanent parenting plan. Keith signed on Aug. 29, while Nicole added her signature Sept. 6. The plan confirms that Nicole will be the primary residential parent of their daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. The arrangement gives Nicole 306 days a year with the girls, while Keith will have them for 59 days.
Despite the split, the pair appears united on financial terms. Neither requested child support, alimony, or spousal support. Their agreement emphasizes a commitment to co-parenting respectfully, with the document stating: “They will not speak badly of each other … They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families.”
The couple, who wed in 2006, had reportedly been living apart since early summer 2025. The Oscar winner and the country superstar spent much of the past year on separate paths—Nicole filming Practical Magic 2 in London and Keith touring worldwide.
Looking back, the signs were there. In June, Nicole marked their 19th wedding anniversary with a cozy Instagram photo captioned, “Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban.” Keith’s only response? A single heart emoji, without posting his own tribute. Fans now see that subtle moment as a clue that not all was well.
By late summer, their lives looked even more separate. Nicole posted “summer memories” with her daughters, noticeably without Keith. And in July, the country star made headlines when he abruptly exited a radio interview after being asked about Nicole’s chemistry with Zac Efron in their film A Family Affair.
Adding to the speculation, Kidman applied for Portuguese residency over the summer, with reports that Keith planned to follow later around his touring schedule.
Although Nicole has officially filed, insiders hint the story might not be entirely over. A source recently told the Daily Mail: “Keith never sees Nicole, either she is filming or he is on tour. There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce … If this separation gets them back together, that would be amazing.”
Still, the divorce documents paint a clear picture: Nicole has taken the first legal step toward closure. Whether reconciliation is possible remains to be seen, but for now, one of Hollywood’s golden couples has reached a heartbreaking turning point.
