For years, fans have speculated about the status of Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift’s relationship. From public displays of support during Olivia’s breakout era to endless online theories about songwriting credits and alleged tension, the narrative has taken on a life of its own across social media.
Now, Rodrigo is addressing the speculation once again — and making it clear that she’s not interested in getting caught up in internet detective work.
When Rodrigo first burst onto the music scene with “Drivers License,” Swift was one of the biggest stars publicly championing the young singer. The two exchanged supportive messages online, posed together at industry events, and appeared to have a genuine mentor-protégé dynamic. But fans noticed a shift after Rodrigo retroactively added songwriting credits to Swift, Jack Antonoff, and Annie Clark on her 2021 hit “Deja Vu.”
The credit adjustment came months after the song’s release and sparked widespread discussion about whether similarities between “Deja Vu” and Swift’s “Cruel Summer” had led to a behind-the-scenes copyright dispute. While neither artist publicly detailed what happened, Variety reported in 2021 that “what seems likely is that the matter was settled quietly behind the scenes, as is often the situation with potential copyright-infringement cases.”
As the years went on, public interactions between the two artists became notably scarce, fueling ongoing rumors that their relationship had cooled.
Still, recent events have suggested that things may not be nearly as dramatic as fans have imagined. In March 2026, Rodrigo and Swift were spotted attending a Paul McCartney concert in Los Angeles, where observers noted the two stars standing near one another.
During a recent appearance on The New York Times’ Popcast, Rodrigo was asked about the endless speculation surrounding her relationship with Swift. Rather than adding fuel to the conversation, the Grammy winner brushed off the rumors entirely.
“I don’t really read that far into it,” Olivia said. “I think it comes with the territory, and it’s par for the course. I think if I dove into every internet detective sleuth that got things right or wrong about my life or any of my relationships, I think I’d just go crazy. There’s just not enough time in the day.”
It’s a mindset Rodrigo has developed over the past several years as she’s navigated an intense level of public scrutiny. Few artists have experienced a breakout quite like hers, and with that success came endless theories about her friendships, romances, and songwriting inspirations.
The singer reflected on one of the earliest examples of that phenomenon: the frenzy surrounding “Drivers License.” When the song became a global sensation in 2021, fans became obsessed with dissecting its lyrics and connecting them to fellow Disney stars Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter.
Looking back, Rodrigo says learning to distance herself from online speculation became essential for her well-being.
She said, “I had to detach from it in order to literally be OK. It was just such a crazy experience for everyone involved. Yeah, I think I just had to learn to detach, and I think that’s something that I’m hopefully good at these days, still trying to detach from people who don’t know every little detail of my life. I think you just have to, otherwise you just go kind of crazy.”
The comments align with what Rodrigo has said previously about fans assigning specific meanings to her music. In 2023, when rumors circulated that her hit single “Vampire” was inspired by Swift, she quickly shut down the speculation.
“I was very surprised when people thought that,” she told The Guardian. “I mean, I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.”
For Rodrigo, it seems the focus remains firmly on the music rather than the rumors. While fans may continue searching for clues and hidden meanings, the singer has made it clear that she’s not spending her time trying to decode every theory circulating online.
