A return to McKinley High may be closer than television fans think.
Speaking on the red carpet at the American Horror Story Season 13 celebration event on Wednesday night, September 23, prolific executive producer Ryan Murphy revealed that he has officially penned a pilot script for a potential reboot of his hit musical-comedy series Glee.
Joining forces once again with his original co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, Murphy confirmed that the trio recently wrapped writing on a brand-new iteration of the franchise.
“Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago,” Murphy told Entertainment Tonight. “We have a script. Brad, Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.”
Murphy further shared that he has already floated the idea to several key cast members who helped launch the pop-culture sensation over a decade ago.
“I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, and it’s very sweet,” Murphy revealed. “They’ve all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
Despite the positive preliminary conversations, Murphy noted that the project remains in its earliest development stages and that no actors have actually read the new material yet.
“Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know; we’ll see,” Murphy cautioned. “I mean, I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it.”
Glee originally aired on Fox for six seasons from 2009 to 2015, transforming into a global cultural phenomenon, earning multiple Golden Globe Awards, and sending dozens of cast covers onto the Billboard charts. The original ensemble cast included Lea Michele, the late Cory Monteith, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Matthew Morrison, and Jane Lynch, as well as Harry Shum Jr., the late Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Darren Criss, Chord Overstreet, Melissa Benoist, Alex Newell, and Becca Tobin.
Over its 121-episode run, the show became famous for hosting high-profile guest stars, including Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Britney Spears, Matt Bomer, Carol Burnett, Josh Groban, Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos, Olivia Newton-John, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Lovato, Adam Lambert, Kate Hudson, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The script completion marks the strongest signal yet that the musical franchise could return, following Murphy’s casual remarks earlier this month that he was actively “considering” revisiting the property. Both legacy seasons of Glee are currently available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
