The entertainment world is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved actors.

Sam Neill, whose career spanned more than five decades and included unforgettable performances in Jurassic Park, The Piano, Peaky Blinders and countless other acclaimed productions, has died at the age of 78.

His family confirmed that the New Zealand actor passed away on Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia.

In a statement shared with Variety, Neill’s family reflected on his final days while asking for privacy as they grieve.

“It is with immense sadness that the wh?nau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the statement read.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care. More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”

News of Neill’s passing comes only months after he shared encouraging health updates following an extensive battle with blood cancer.

Diagnosed with stage three blood cancer in March 2022, the actor underwent CAR T-cell therapy and announced earlier this year that he was cancer-free.

His openness about his diagnosis inspired fans around the world, with Neill approaching his illness with the same honesty, resilience and quiet humor that defined so much of his public life.

Born in Northern Ireland and raised in New Zealand, Neill became one of the country’s most celebrated actors before establishing himself as an internationally respected leading man.

Although his filmography stretches across dozens of acclaimed projects, he will forever be closely associated with one role in particular: Dr. Alan Grant.

Neill first portrayed the paleontologist in Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, helping anchor one of cinema’s most influential adventure films.

His thoughtful, understated performance gave emotional weight to a story filled with groundbreaking visual effects and unforgettable dinosaurs.

He later reprised the role in The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, and, nearly three decades after the original film, reunited with original castmates Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic World Dominion.

Earlier this year, the trio delighted longtime fans once again by appearing together in an Xfinity Super Bowl commercial that playfully celebrated their shared cinematic history.

Outside the Jurassic franchise, Neill built an astonishingly diverse career.

He earned widespread acclaim for his work in Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning drama The Piano, starred opposite Nicole Kidman in Dead Calm, charmed audiences in Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and portrayed Winston Churchill in the historical drama Peaky Blinders.

More recently, audiences embraced his performances in television series including The Twelve, Apples Never Fall, and Untamed, demonstrating that even after decades in the industry, Neill remained one of its busiest and most respected performers.

His career was far from over.

Neill had completed work on two upcoming films that will now be released posthumously.

He appears alongside Daisy Ridley, Alden Ehrenreich and an ensemble cast in The Last Resort, while fans will also see him in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, starring opposite Dan Stevens, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo.

Both projects now stand as final chapters in an extraordinary body of work.

Colleagues frequently praised Neill not only for his talent but also for his warmth, generosity and unmistakable sense of humor.

Whether leading blockbuster franchises or appearing in intimate independent dramas, he brought intelligence, humanity and effortless charisma to every performance.

His ability to move comfortably between Hollywood spectacles, prestige television and international cinema made him one of the industry’s most versatile actors.

His performances have entertained generations of movie lovers, while his courage during his health journey inspired countless others beyond the screen.

Sam Neill leaves behind an extraordinary artistic legacy that spans more than half a century and continues through the films and television series that introduced him to audiences around the world.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, collaborators and the millions of fans who admired his remarkable life and career.
