Long before Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco became husband and wife, they made a deliberate choice to protect their relationship from public attention.
Now, Benny is opening up about those early months together—and revealing that Selena actually gave him every opportunity to step away before they told the world they were a couple.
In a new interview with El País, the Grammy-winning producer reflected on how carefully they approached the beginning of their romance, explaining that privacy wasn’t simply a preference—it was something they both actively worked to preserve.
“We kept our relationship private for a long time, about eight or nine months,” Benny said.
As their connection became more serious, Selena wanted to make sure Benny fully understood what life in the spotlight alongside one of the world’s biggest pop stars would mean.
According to Benny, she gave him an honest opportunity to reconsider.
“And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’ And then I said, ‘You know what? Screw it.’ We’re lucky because we both have friends and family we’ve known since before all this, and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”
The story offers another glimpse into the thoughtful way the couple approached their relationship from the beginning.
Instead of rushing to announce their romance, they chose to build it away from constant headlines. By the time they confirmed they were together publicly, their relationship already had a solid foundation.
That decision now seems especially understandable considering the intense public interest that has followed Selena for much of her adult life.
As one of music’s biggest stars—and someone whose personal life has frequently generated international headlines—Selena has often spoken about protecting her peace and establishing healthy boundaries.
Benny admitted that navigating fame has never been his favorite part of the job either.
“I don’t like to expose my life. Famous people are under constant scrutiny: if you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say another, it’s also wrong.”
While fans now regularly see glimpses of their marriage online, Benny explained that he still approaches social media cautiously.
He described himself as belonging to “that transitional generation where social media didn’t exist when I was a child.”
Selena and Benny tied the knot in September 2025 during a celebration attended by family members and close friends from across music, film and television. The wedding quickly became one of entertainment’s biggest events of the year, but even then, the couple kept much of the celebration intimate.
Professionally, both remain busier than ever.
Selena continues balancing acting, music, producing and the ongoing success of Rare Beauty, while Benny remains one of pop music’s most sought-after producers and songwriters.
Despite their demanding schedules, interviews with both have increasingly highlighted something fans have noticed themselves: they seem remarkably comfortable simply being together.
Rather than presenting an idealized version of romance, they’ve often embraced humor, honesty and everyday moments.
Benny’s latest interview adds another layer to that story, revealing that before the headlines, before the wedding and before the public declarations, their relationship began with one simple question—and an answer that changed both of their lives.
