Sia is speaking out after her estranged husband, Dan Bernad, made explosive allegations about her sobriety amid their ongoing custody dispute.
The 49-year-old “Chandelier” singer filed for divorce from Bernad in March after two years of marriage. The couple initially agreed that Sia would retain full custody of their 19-month-old son, Sumni. But Bernad has since filed for sole custody and is seeking $77,245 a month in child support, People reports.
In his filing, Bernad accused Sia of being “a serious and immediate danger” to their child, alleging “substance abuse and addiction.” He further claimed, “Sia’s conduct is reckless, dangerous and demonstrates Sia’s utter disregard for Summi’s safety and well-being.”
Sia, however, has firmly denied the claims. “I have been fully sober for over six months and working my program which includes weekly testing and a sober companion,” she wrote in her legal response. “My recovery has been a cornerstone of my life and one of the primary reasons I chose to separate from Dan, whose ongoing engagement in a nightlife and recreational drug-use lifestyle is incompatible with a healthy environment for our child.”
The singer also raised serious concerns about Bernad’s own behavior, claiming he was investigated by both the Los Angeles Police Department and the Department of Child and Family Services for alleged child pornography. Though those cases were later closed as inconclusive, Sia says she still fears for her son’s safety.
“While I understand the investigations of LAPD and DCFS have been inconclusive and now closed, this does not appease my concerns of Summi spending unsupervised time with Dan,” she added.
Sia believes Bernad’s latest filings are financially motivated, noting his separate request for spousal support earlier this month.
For now, both sides await the court’s decision in what has quickly become one of the singer’s most personal legal battles yet.
