Tia Mowry is opening up about parenting—and her perspective may surprise some people.

The 47-year-old actress and author recently sat down with Parade for a candid conversation about raising kids and how her own upbringing shaped her approach. As a mom of two, she explained why she doesn’t believe a parent’s role is to make their children happy all the time.

“I don’t think it is your job to make your kids happy,” Tia said in the interview. Instead, she believes parents should prioritize guidance, safety, and teaching kids independence rather than constantly catering to their desires.

“I think that it is your job to keep your kids safe, nurture them, guide them, but they have to learn on their own how to make themselves happy, because we don’t want to create co-dependency,” she added.

Tia pointed to her own childhood as a major influence. Growing up, she and her siblings were raised in a household where strict rules were the norm. “I think growing up, it was definitely a cultural thing where it’s like, ‘My house, my rules,’” she explained. While she respects her parents’ approach, she’s chosen a different path for her family.

Instead of leaning into control, Tia wants her kids to have a voice. “I didn’t want to do that with my children. I wanted my children to never be afraid to express themselves,” she said.

The actress has been vocal before about motherhood and mental health, often using her platform to encourage open dialogue. Her honesty resonates with fans who appreciate her willingness to challenge traditional parenting norms.
