Travis Kelce isn’t holding back when it comes to talking about Taylor Swift. In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, the NFL star opened up about their relationship, from how it began to what it’s like supporting each other under intense public scrutiny.
One thing that drew them closer? Understanding the pressures of living life in the spotlight. “I hadn’t experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions,” Travis said. “That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows. She may not think of herself as an athlete. She will never tell anyone that she is an athlete. But I’ve seen what she goes through… it’s mind-blowing.”
He’s seen firsthand the grueling demands of her Eras Tour. “The [Eras Tour] floor is literally—a football-field-sized computer,” he explained. “You take that into Singapore, where it is scorching hot, and you’re doing a show for three hours with a lot of energy… That is arguably more exhausting than how much I put in on a Sunday, and she’s doing it three, four, five days in a row.”
Asked what he’s learned from her, Travis didn’t hesitate. “She is so good at mesmerizing everybody and making everybody feel like it’s an intimate situation,” he said. “There is so much calm and coolness… She’s beautiful. She’s up there making everyone feel at ease.”
Travis admits he’s also happy to be in the audience. “I get to be the plus one. I get to go and be that fan… And it’s so cool that I get to experience her being that plus one for me on the football field.”
Taylor, it turns out, has become a genuine NFL fan. “She is the most engulfed fan now… She understands what special situations are, third and short—all these things because she just naturally loves to hear about my job,” he said.
On the public moments they’ve shared, like attending the US Open together, Travis explained, “It may look like we’re partying. But I’m just enjoying the fun of being at this really cool event that I always wanted to go to with the person that I love.”
Still, they’re mindful of how they come across. “You can’t block [the media] out,” Travis admitted. “If someone says something they don’t like about you, you have to be able to understand how you are portraying yourself.”
He even noted a sweet connection between Taylor and his mom, Donna Kelce: “Their kindness, their genuineness… And on top of that, their work ethic.”
For all the outside noise, Travis says their relationship is grounded in something simple. “Whenever I’m with her, it feels like we’re just regular people… We are two fun-loving people who have the morals to appreciate everyone for who they are. We share all those values. It kind of just took the f–k off.”
