Zac Efron is taking on a new kind of project, and this one has nothing to do with Hollywood.
The actor, who has spent recent years expanding his interests beyond acting and into sustainability, wellness, and environmental advocacy, is reportedly moving forward with plans for an ambitious eco-friendly home in Australia that will be constructed primarily using hemp-based building materials.
The project is already generating attention for its unconventional approach to sustainable living, and according to those involved, it could become a showcase for what environmentally conscious residential construction might look like in the future.
Efron has frequently spoken about his appreciation for the country’s landscapes, outdoor lifestyle, and connection to nature. Now, it appears he is bringing those values directly into the design of his next home.
News of the project first gained traction after designer Joost Bakker shared an update on Instagram in May, posting a group photo featuring Efron and members of the design and construction team.
“Excited to get started on Zac‘s house! Especially want to thank these two legends @main__frank for working so hard to get this project designed and approved!” Bakker wrote.
While celebrity real estate projects are nothing new, this particular development stands out because of its emphasis on sustainability.
According to the Australian Financial Review, the home will be situated on a sprawling 128-hectare property located near the border of Queensland and New South Wales. The land spans approximately 316 acres, giving the project ample room for both residential living and environmentally focused design features.
What makes the home especially unique is the extensive use of hemp.
Often associated with industrial and sustainable manufacturing, hemp has increasingly become a popular building material due to its durability, insulation qualities, and reduced environmental impact compared to traditional construction products.
Reports indicate that the majority of the building materials used throughout Efron’s home will be hemp-based and sourced from a nearby local farm.
The commitment to hemp won’t stop at the structure itself.
Additional household items, including curtains, pillows, mattresses, and other furnishings, are also expected to incorporate hemp-derived materials wherever possible.
The finished residence is reportedly set to feature six bedrooms, expansive living spaces, and a rooftop garden designed to further integrate the home into its natural surroundings.
For Bakker, the project appears to be about more than simply building a luxury property.
The designer has long been known for championing sustainable architecture and innovative environmental solutions. In interviews discussing the project, he has even floated unconventional ideas for everyday household items.
