Selena Gomez is getting candid about how her weight fluctuations have affected her over the years.

The 28-year-old star recently did a “Life in Looks” episode for Vogue, where she reflected on 15 of her fashion looks – both best and worst.

Talking about her earlier looks, the Disney alum reflected on her journey to age up her look.

And one particular outfit that she was totally feeling was her Versace dress with the high slit that she wore to the 2013 VMAs.

“I remember for the first time feeling like a woman,” she shared.

For the 2015 Met Gala, where she wore a white Vera Wang gown, she opened up about having body image issues at the time.

“I fluctuate a lot with my weight,” Selena explained, “and I remember this night specifically I didn’t feel good about my body.”

“What was really amazing was that I actually got a chance to work on the dress that fit my body,” she added. “I had such a beautiful time shaping this dress. I think that we came together and built something really beautiful and something that fit me really well.”

Selena was 22 at the time – and that night led her to realize something: “That was one of the moments where I was like, I don’t have to be that 19-year-old body shape anymore because I’m not.”

That wasn’t the only red carpet she’d had to walk where she wasn’t 100% with her body image though.

During the 2019 premiere of her movie The Dead Don’t Die, she pointed out that that “was also a moment in my life where I had fluctuated in weight.”

“I’m very honest with the people on my team, so I didn’t want to wear anything tight, and then I tried this dress on and I felt so beautiful,” she said. “And it definitely highlighted this area [her chest] a lot. But I felt like a Barbie doll.”

Back in 2015, Selena revealed that she’d been diagnosed with lupus. And in 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant. She has previously opened up about how people’s comments on the resulting weight fluctuations – which she points out was because of a “combination” of factors, not directly because of her lupus – has affected her.

“I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” Selena recalled in a 2019 interview on the Raquelle Stevens’ podcast Giving Back Generation. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life — it depends on even the month, to be honest,” Selena said. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.”

And those negative comments she received about her weight? “That got to me big time. I think for me, that really messed me up for a bit.”

More recently, however, Selena revealed a sporty side to her. She went on Instagram Story with a video of her on a basketball court.

“So, my friends asked me if I could do a three-pointer and I said ‘yes,”’ Sel said in the clip as she broke out in a laugh.

“So, here we are,” one friend added.

She got in position and gave it her best shot – but missed. And she jokingly captioned her attempt, “So… I can’t.”

However, before taking the shot, she did reveal an injury that may affect her three-point shot attempt.

“Update—I recently had an injury in the kitchen,” she shared in a video, showing off a Band-Aid on one of her middle fingers. “And I may not be able to perform well, so you know.”
