Selena Gomez is sharing what the “most important thing in the world” for her is when it comes to dealing with her mental health.

“I’ve tried a ton of different things, but the one thing I’ve never stopped doing is asking for help,” Selena told People. “That was the hardest part, but I truly believe that that’s why I’m stronger.”

The “Rare” singer has been candid about her mental health struggles like dealing with anxiety and depression. In April, she revealed that she was bipolar on Miley Cyrus’ Instagram show Bright Minded.

“I went to one of the best mental health hospitals in America, McLean Hospital [affiliated with Harvard University in Massachusetts], and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized I was bipolar,” she shared with Miley.

She also shared that that she’s working to “use the tools that I’ve used in therapy” to help cope with self-isolating and social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic

In her People interview, she gave a low-down on what she does when she’s having a tough day.

“The first thing I do is find space alone, because I [tend to] push and push myself so I don’t have to think about my feelings,” Selena shared. “I’ll go to my room, lie down, drink some water and take a few deep breaths. Then if I need a friend, I call a friend. If I need my therapist, I call my therapist. On top of the heavy stuff, it’s important to just take time with yourself and be gentle. I know it can seem like bulls–t, but it’s true!”

Selena has been finding other ways to cope with the new normal. Back in May, she shared a behind-the-scenes look on some of her quarantine rituals that help her stay positive – which include staying creative, working on her mental health, and finding time to relax. She hopes that it can help others, too. “There isn’t really one easy way to get through all of this.”
