Shawn Mendes’ new Netflix documentary Shawn Mendes: In Wonder gives fans a peek on the singer’s life beyond the screen and stage – and also reveals more details about Shawn and girlfriend Camila Cabello’s high-profile romance.

Shawn and Camila have been friends for years before becoming a couple. And while they didn’t go public right away, fans have been speculating about their romance ever since the pair dropped their 2019 hit collab “Señorita.”

Then, there’s the infamous almost-kiss during their performance at the 2019 Video Music Awards, which got everyone – even the stars in the audience – totally calling for them to makeout onstage.

Okay, so they kinda left audiences hanging with their final pose in the performance, but, apparently, there was a lot of intimate moments that the couple shared during rehearsal.

On particular clip in In Wonder showed the couple rehearsing for the 2019 VMAs. At one point, Shawn walks away and sits down, then Camila comes over to him, kisses him and comforts him, telling him “I love you. Do you know that?”

Shawn explains the significance of how that scene captures some of the dynamics of their relationship.

“There’s this side of us that are best friends, and we’ve been best friends since we were like 16 years old, and I really feel like it comes across in the [film],” he says. “There’s this one scene that always reminds me of how lucky I am to have her because we’re at the VMAs and I’m sitting there, and I get really nervous for any award show, or pretty much anything at this point actually.”

“I get really nervous because I really care, and I’m breathing, and I’m playing, and she comes over and goes, ‘You know that I love you, right?’ And I go, ‘I know.’ It’s kind of like, when she says that, it’s like, ‘It’s gonna be fine.’” Shawn said. “It’s always something that brings me back to Earth.”

In the documentary, Shawn shares a lot of vulnerable moments – including when he told Camila that “every song” he’s ever written was about her.

“We were in New York and my song comes on the radio or something, and the fact comes up that it’s about her, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, it’s about you.’ And I’m like, ‘Everything is about you. They’ve always been about you,’” he admits during In Wonder. “She goes, ‘What do you mean?’ I’m like, ‘They’re all about you. Like, every song I’ve ever wrote.’ And I’m, like, rhyming off the songs. I’m like, ‘Treat You Better,’ like, all these songs. And she’s like, ‘Oh, my God.’ She literally had no idea. This whole time I thought she, like, knew.”

However, he says that no song will do their relationship “justice.”

“I don’t think I’ll be able to write songs that really do it justice, that can really capture the things and the feelings with her,” Shawn explains in the documentary. “I think it’s like when you see a moon or stars and you try to take a photo of it with your iPhone, and then you just can’t, it just doesn’t look good. And you’re like, ‘It’s not supposed to be captured.’ You know? It’s just supposed to be for us.”
