Benedict Cumberbatch found himself at the center of an unexpectedly public confrontation this week after video footage surfaced showing the actor in a heated roadside argument with another cyclist in London.
On Monday (May 11), Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times uploaded a video to Instagram capturing the tense exchange involving the Doctor Strange and Sherlock actor. The clip quickly spread online, with social media users dissecting everything from the argument itself to the surprisingly intense energy behind it.
In the footage, Cumberbatch is seen wearing a bicycle helmet while arguing with another cyclist who remains seated on his bike throughout the confrontation. The dispute appeared to center around alleged traffic violations, with the unidentified cyclist accusing the actor of repeatedly running red lights while cycling through the city.
“You’re deluded, you’re lying. I was behind you the entire time,” the cyclist said during the argument.
Cumberbatch strongly denied the accusations and insisted the situation escalated because the other man had “verbally abused” him. The actor also claimed he “braked” his bicycle in response to the confrontation.
The cyclist, however, pushed back immediately.
“Oh no, I verbally abused you because you completely and repeatedly broke the law,” he replied.
Cumberbatch continued denying the claims before eventually acknowledging that he may have crossed a red light “once,” while also insisting he took responsibility for it.
According to Page Six, the confrontation reportedly lasted around 10 minutes before the cyclist eventually left the scene. Cumberbatch, meanwhile, stayed behind afterward to greet fans and pose for photos.
An eyewitness who spoke to the outlet described the incident as surreal, particularly once it became clear the cyclist recognized exactly who he was arguing with.
“It was such a pompous road rage it almost felt like it had been staged,” the witness claimed, adding that the cyclist appeared to become even more aggressive after realizing the man he was confronting was the Oscar-nominated actor.
Cumberbatch himself has long been known for navigating London by bicycle rather than relying heavily on private drivers or security teams, something fans have often praised for keeping him relatively grounded despite his global fame.
The actor has largely kept a low public profile outside of his film work in recent years, focusing primarily on acting projects and producing. He most recently appeared in several high-profile film and television releases while continuing his role in Marvel’s cinematic universe as Doctor Strange.
So far, Cumberbatch has not publicly commented further on the viral incident beyond what was captured in the video itself.
