Chappell Roan is addressing a rapidly escalating controversy that has spilled from a hotel breakfast encounter into international headlines.

The 28-year-old pop star found herself at the center of a viral moment after Brazilian soccer player Jorginho Frello publicly accused her team of mishandling an interaction involving his 11-year-old daughter during Lollapalooza Brasil weekend in São Paulo.

Jorginho detailed the experience in a lengthy Instagram post, describing what he called an “upsetting situation” involving a security guard. According to his account, his daughter—who had been excited to see Roan—briefly walked past the singer’s table to confirm it was her, without approaching or speaking.

“What happened next was completely disproportionate,” he wrote, alleging that a security guard approached his family in an “extremely aggressive manner,” accusing the child of disrespect and harassment. “Honestly, I don’t know at what point simply walking past a table and looking to see if someone is there can be considered harassment.”

The post quickly gained traction, amplified further when Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, publicly responded—going so far as to declare that Roan would not be invited to perform at the city’s Todo Mundo no Rio concert series.

Amid mounting backlash, Roan addressed the situation directly via Instagram Stories. “I’m just gonna tell my half of the story of what happened today with a mother and child who were involved with a security guard…who was not my personal security,” she began.

“I didn’t even see – I didn’t even see a woman and a child. Like I did not. No one came up to me, no one bothered me like, I was just sitting at breakfast in my hotel,” she continued.

Roan emphasized that she did not instruct anyone to intervene. “I did not ask the security guard to go up and talk to this mother and child. They did not come up to me! They weren’t doing anything!”

She added, “It’s unfair for security to just assume someone doesn’t have good intentions when they have no reason to believe because there’s no action even taken.”

Addressing the emotional fallout, Roan said: “I do not hate people who are fans of my music. I do not hate children. Like, that is crazy. I’m sorry to the mother and child that someone was assuming something… That makes me really sad. You did not deserve that.”

Catherine Harding, Jorginho’s wife, later shared her own account, clarifying that while she could not confirm whether the guard was directly employed by Roan, he appeared to be associated with her team.

“I know that Chappell has responded saying that it wasn’t… her security and that she didn’t do it,” Harding said. “So, 100% this security guard was not a security guard of the hotel… Did she send him to do it? Again, I don’t know.”

Harding also reflected on the broader issue of accountability, noting, “I think that you have a responsibility when you are a celebrity to make sure… that the people that work for you and that act on your behalf are acting on your behalf.”

Despite the controversy, Roan proceeded with her Lollapalooza Brazil performance, where she expressed gratitude to her team: “I’m so grateful, so thank you! And thank you to my crew, and my security, and my band, and everyone behind the scenes. This takes a lot of people, so thank you.”
