Hollywood is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Hayden Panettiere.

The beloved actress, whose career spanned more than three decades from childhood stardom to acclaimed performances in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died on Sunday, August 16, at the age of 36. Her representative confirmed the news, while her family later shared a statement remembering Hayden as “an incredible light and a force of nature.” Authorities have not yet announced an official cause of death, though investigators have said there were no signs of trauma and the case remains under investigation.

Almost immediately, friends, co-stars and fellow actors began sharing deeply personal tributes, remembering not only Hayden’s remarkable talent but also her kindness, humor and generosity away from the cameras.

One of the first public messages came from Selma Blair, who left a heartbreaking comment beneath Hayden’s final Instagram post.

“I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please.”

The simple message captured the disbelief many throughout Hollywood have expressed following the sudden loss.

Childhood friend Heather Matarazzo also reflected on a friendship that stretched back decades.

“Devastated…… We first met on the LIRR traveling to NYC for auditions when we were both kids. Every time our paths crossed, my heart always filled up.”

“She was special. She was a Sprite of a being and such a talent,” the Princess Diaries actress continued. “Truly a light….. Love you, Hayden.”

Kim Cattrall, who portrayed Hayden’s mother in Disney’s Ice Princess, also honored her former co-star by sharing a throwback photo from the beloved 2005 film.

“Rest in peace, sweet Hayden,” Cattrall wrote. “Gone far too soon 💔”

The Scream family has likewise been vocal in celebrating Hayden’s life and legacy.

Neve Campbell, who appeared alongside Hayden in Scream 4, released a heartfelt statement remembering the actress’ warmth on set.

“I found Hayden to be really kind and funny and brought a magnetic energy to set. She was a true talent which shows in the decades she worked in such a short life. Her family and loved ones are in my prayers.”

David Arquette kept his tribute brief but deeply personal, commenting simply:

“I love you Hayden.”

Emma Roberts, another Scream 4 co-star, wrote:

“Rest in peace my sweet friend. you are so loved and you will be forever missed ❤️.”

Meanwhile, Hayden’s Scream VI castmates also shared emotional messages across social media.

Melissa Barrera posted:

“Rest in peace sweet Hayden.”

Jenna Ortega remembered her with a childhood photograph, writing:

“This is such a devastating loss. Rest well.”

Barrera later expanded on her tribute in a statement that reflected the admiration so many colleagues had for Hayden throughout her career.

“I’m still in shock. Hayden should still be here,” Barrera wrote. “I feel so incredibly lucky that I got to grow up watching her and admiring her, and that I got to know her and share the screen with her. She will always be an icon in my book. Her strength and her light, despite everything she went through, were so evident and will always stay with me. I am forever grateful to her because she showed up for me when no one else did.”

“That was just the kind of person she was: A rare, honest, badass who felt so deeply. Such a heart-shattering loss. My condolences and love to her mother, her beautiful daughter, and her loved ones.”

Among the most emotional tributes came from Hayden Panettiere’s Nashville family, the cast and crew she worked alongside for six seasons while portraying country music star Juliette Barnes.

Connie Britton, who starred opposite Hayden as Rayna Jaymes, shared a moving message that reflected both her admiration for Hayden’s extraordinary talent and the heartbreak of losing her far too soon.

“This was Hayden. Bursting with brilliance, shining so bright,” Britton wrote alongside a photo of her longtime co-star. “I have no words for this sad song. Just heartbreak. I love you girl. Sleep easy now.”

Charles Esten, who played Deacon Claybourne on Nashville, shared a personal story about how they met and becoming good friends with the actress.

“We became fast friends, working very hard to play those 2 troubled Nashvillians, but always having fun and laughing a whole lot along the way,” he wrote. “She was, of course, extraordinarily talented, infusing her larger-than-life character with all the heart, charisma, humor, whip-smart intelligence, and flat-out magic that were, alongside whatever troubles and pain she carried, a part of her own personal palette. What a great gift it was to act with her, sing with her, and to just be her friend… We are heartbroken that she is gone.”

The wave of tributes continued throughout the entertainment industry as more friends and collaborators reflected on Hayden Panettiere’s life, career and the lasting impact she had on those around her.

Paris Hilton remembered Hayden as both a friend and someone whose warmth left a lasting impression.

“Heartbroken over the loss of my friend Hayden,” Hilton wrote on Instagram. “She was such a beautiful soul — so talented, strong, kind and full of so much love and light. It’s impossible to believe she’s gone.”

She continued, “I will always cherish our friendship” and the memories they shared over the years.

“Love you forever, Hayden. Rest in peace, angel,” she added. “You will be so deeply missed.”

Heroes co-star Masi Oka, who portrayed Hiro Nakamura alongside Hayden’s Claire Bennet, also shared an emotional remembrance.

“Absolutely heartbroken to hear about Hayden,” Oka wrote. “I had the privilege of working closely with her, and I’ll always remember her for her beautiful spirit, immense talent and the joyful energy she brought to everything she did and the people around her.”

He added, “She was way wiser beyond her years and now gone too soon. My heart goes out to her family and everyone who loved her. Rest in peace, Hayden.”

Bethany Joy Lenz, who first met Hayden during their Guiding Light days when Hayden was still a child actress, admitted the news left her reeling.

“I’m crushed.”

Reflecting on Hayden’s recent chapter, Lenz wrote, “Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life.”

She ended her tribute with heartbreaking honesty.

“I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real.”

Viola Davis, who worked with Hayden on both The Architect and Custody, remembered her former co-star with immense admiration, describing her as an “old, wise soul with such a deep heart” before adding, “I wish the world had more time with you.”

Rosie O’Donnell shared a simple but emotional message:

“Oh my god – heartbroken.”

Singer JoJo called the news “devastating.”

Alyson Stoner, who shared the role of Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, honored Hayden with an emotional video tribute, writing:

“From one Kairi to another… One sky, one destiny. 🕊️ My deepest condolences to Hayden’s family, community, and the many lives Hayden reached.”

“May you rest in freedom, Hayden. 💕✨ And sending love to my fellow KH community worldwide who have cherished Hayden’s work as Kairi through the decades. Take care.”

Podcaster Jay Shetty, who interviewed Hayden earlier this year for his On Purpose podcast, reflected on how much their friendship had grown in such a short time.

“I can’t believe it. Our friendship had just begun and I was so moved by the conversation we shared earlier this year.”

His tribute carried added weight because Hayden had recently spoken candidly on his show about her life, including her recovery, motherhood, childhood fame and her hopes for the future.

Hayden herself had become an outspoken advocate for addiction recovery and mental health awareness in recent years, speaking openly about the challenges she faced throughout her life and career. That honesty earned her admiration from fans and colleagues alike, many of whom said her willingness to share her struggles helped others feel less alone.

Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement that beautifully summed up how they hope Hayden will be remembered.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”

Hayden is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, along with her parents, extended family and countless friends, colleagues and fans around the world. Her career began before she was even a year old, eventually growing into one of television’s most recognizable young stars through unforgettable performances in Heroes, Nashville, Ice Princess and the Scream franchise.
