Awards season is officially heating up.

The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were unveiled on Wednesday, July 8, giving television fans their first look at the shows, performances and creative teams that will compete for one of the industry’s highest honors this September.

This year’s announcement began with a live reveal of the nominees for Outstanding Variety Program and Outstanding Reality Competition Program during NBC’s Today. Later in the morning, actors Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) and Jeff Hiller (Somebody Somewhere) announced the remaining nominees from the Wolf Theatre at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.

As always, nomination morning delivered plenty of excitement, a few surprises and the beginning of what is expected to be another closely watched awards race.

This year’s ceremony also marks a milestone for NBC.

The network will celebrate its 100th anniversary while broadcasting the Emmys, with longtime Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay stepping into hosting duties for the first time.

The Emmy-winning actress shared her excitement shortly after the announcement.

“Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers,” Hargitay said in a statement.

She continued, “Whether it’s an actor or a director, a costumer or a sound designer, we are all so privileged to take part in creating television that unites us. Regardless of how, where, or when we watch, we are together in our laughter, our tears, our love of stories — and our delighted anticipation to see what happens next.”

For Hargitay, the hosting role adds another chapter to an extraordinary television career.

Best known for portraying Olivia Benson for nearly three decades, she has become one of the medium’s most recognizable faces while earning nine Emmy nominations and one win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Now she’ll help guide an evening celebrating the very industry she has helped shape.

This year’s nominations also arrive following an impressive year for television.

Streaming platforms continue to compete aggressively with traditional networks, while audiences have embraced a wide range of dramas, comedies, limited series and unscripted programming.

The diversity of content reflected in this year’s ballot highlights just how competitive the television landscape has become.

Last year’s Emmy winners set a high bar heading into this year’s race.

Among the night’s biggest winners were The Studio, which claimed Outstanding Comedy Series, and The Pitt, which earned Outstanding Drama Series.

Acting honors also went to several acclaimed performers.

Seth Rogen and Jean Smart took home awards for Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series, while Noah Wyle and Britt Lower earned recognition for their leading performances.

With another year of standout television now behind us, attention turns to which programs will emerge as this season’s biggest success stories.

The winners will be revealed during the live ceremony on Sunday, September 14, airing on NBC.
