Hilary Duff is getting candid about the unconventional timeline of her relationship with husband Matthew Koma — and according to her, having kids before marriage turned out to be one of the best parts of their love story.
The 38-year-old actress and singer recently appeared on SiriusXM’s The Morgan Stewart Show ahead of her SiriusXM Small Stage Series concert on May 14, where she opened up about the ups, downs, and unexpected twists in her relationship with Matthew.
During the conversation, host Morgan Stewart referenced reports that the couple had broken up before eventually getting married — something Hilary quickly confirmed.
“Twice,” Hilary shared about their split history before marriage. “Broke up, got together.. Got back together, were like, ‘We should have a baby.’ Which is psycho, absolutely psycho. Like three weeks later, I think I was pregnant with Banks.”
The actress laughed while reflecting on how quickly things escalated between them, but she also made it clear that the path ultimately worked for their family.
“We had the baby, got married, which was actually so fun,” she continued. “She walked me down the aisle… It was really, really fun and cute. And like Luca walked Matt down the aisle, which was, I would recommend it to people.”
Hilary’s comments offered a rare glimpse into the deeply personal evolution of her relationship with Matthew, whom she married in 2019. While celebrity relationships are often portrayed as polished and perfectly planned, Hilary’s honesty about breakups, reconciliation, and building a family before marriage resonated with fans online.
Morgan later asked how long the couple had actually spent apart during those breakups.
“Okay. The first time, I feel like maybe he would be like, ‘No, that’s not correct.’ But he remembers things a little bit better than I do,” Hilary said. “I feel like maybe we were broken up for like a year and then the second time we were broken up for like 6 months. Not that long. [Not talking through that time], but weirdly, he would Words With Friends me or something. And he’d always kick my ass, too, which was so annoying.”
The story perfectly captures the laid-back, playful dynamic fans have come to associate with the couple over the years. Despite their brief separations, Hilary and Matthew eventually found their way back to each other and have since become one of Hollywood’s more beloved low-key celebrity families.
Today, the pair share three daughters together — Banks, 7, Mae, 5, and Townes, 2. Hilary is also mom to 14-year-old Luca, whom she shares with ex-husband Mike Comrie.
As Hilary explained during the interview, incorporating their children into the wedding itself ended up becoming one of the most memorable parts of the experience. Instead of waiting for the “perfect” traditional timeline, the couple embraced the life they had already built together — something Hilary now says she’d actually encourage others to consider.
The conversation arrives during another busy chapter for the former Lizzie McGuire star. Hilary recently wrapped another successful run of performances in Las Vegas for her Small Rooms, Big Nerves tour and is now preparing to launch her worldwide The Lucky Me Tour later this summer.
Between music, motherhood, acting, and touring, Hilary continues balancing multiple roles while remaining refreshingly open about the realities of relationships and family life. And judging by her latest interview, she’s more comfortable than ever embracing the imperfect, unexpected moments that shaped her story with Matthew.
