Mel C is opening up about the assumptions she has faced throughout her decades-long career in the spotlight.

The 52-year-old singer, famously known around the world as “Sporty Spice” from the iconic girl group Spice Girls, recently reflected on persistent speculation surrounding her sexuality during an appearance on The Mitch Churi Chat Show.

For years, fans and media commentators made assumptions about Mel C because of her athletic image, short hairstyles, and sporty wardrobe aesthetic during the height of the Spice Girls era in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

“You’ve got all the different ones and the one who’s in the active wear. It was assumed or suggested that I was gay,” Mel C explained.

While the singer made it clear she never personally took offense to the speculation itself, she said the broader issue was the stereotyping attached to it.

“I don’t personally have a problem with that. I mean, it’s none of their friggin’ business. But I just thought, to base it on somebody’s look or the way that they dress, yeah, it was a bit s–t of them.”

Mel C has long been celebrated by LGBTQ+ audiences, and over the years she has become one of the Spice Girls members most closely embraced by queer fans. The singer has frequently acknowledged that support and spoken proudly about her connection to the community at concerts, Pride events, and interviews.

Still, she believes the assumptions made about her appearance reflected a much larger issue surrounding stereotypes in pop culture and society at large.

This also is not the first time the singer has addressed the topic publicly. In 2024, Mel C spoke candidly about what she described as “very rude” assumptions people made based solely on how she looked.

“People said I looked like a lesbian because I had short hair. But how can you look like a lesbian? I find it very rude and extremely offensive to gay people… It’s a stereotypical thing,” Mel C said at the time, according to Attitude.

The conversation arrives amid a larger cultural shift in how celebrities discuss identity, gender expression, and public perception. During the peak of the Spice Girls phenomenon, conversations around sexuality and representation were often framed through narrow media narratives that heavily relied on labels and stereotypes.

As one-fifth of one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, Mel C’s “Sporty Spice” persona became instantly recognizable worldwide. But while the nickname helped define an era of pop culture, the singer has repeatedly emphasized that clothing choices and presentation should never determine assumptions about someone’s sexuality.

Today, Mel C continues to balance music, touring, podcast appearances, and television work while remaining a beloved figure in pop culture history. Her willingness to revisit these conversations decades later has resonated with fans who appreciate her honesty and perspective.

Even years after the Spice Girls changed the face of pop music, Mel C is still using her voice to challenge outdated ideas — and reminding audiences that identity cannot be reduced to stereotypes.
