For years, fans have been fascinated by one particular relationship in Mindy Kaling’s life — and no, it isn’t necessarily a romantic one.

The actress, writer, producer, and creator has built much of her career around stories of love and relationships, from The Office to The Mindy Project, crafting characters endlessly navigating dating disasters and emotional complications. But in a new interview with Bustle, Kaling offered a much more personal look at where her own life stands today — and it sounds very different from the stories she once wrote.

At 46, Kaling says she’s happy, content, and not actively searching for a relationship at all.

“It is crazy for someone like me, who only wrote about the pursuit of romance for so much of my life, to be very happy and content without a partner,” she shared.

The admission feels notable coming from someone whose public image has often been tied to romantic comedies and love-centered narratives. For years, audiences projected versions of those stories onto Kaling herself. But increasingly, she seems to be embracing a different kind of narrative — one centered around family, health, personal growth, and a life that feels full on her own terms.

That doesn’t mean she’s entirely shut off from the possibility of love.

When asked about her dating life, Kaling made it clear that she’s not against the idea.

“I obviously have eyes and ears, and if there was someone that I had a crush on, of course I would react to that, but right now, there is not anyone out there.”

Instead, much of her focus appears to be on her children and the world she’s building around them.

Kaling is mom to daughter Katherine, born in 2017, son Spencer, born in 2020, and daughter Anne, born in 2024. While she occasionally shares glimpses of motherhood, she has consistently maintained strong boundaries around their privacy.

“The ramifications are so immediate for them that I just want to make sure that however I talk about it is in a way that really respects their privacy,” she explained.

That protective instinct has become increasingly important as public speculation around her personal life continues to swirl online.

And inevitably, one name continues to enter the conversation: B. J. Novak.

Kaling and Novak’s friendship has fascinated fans for years. The pair first met while working together on The Office, where their on-screen characters mirrored some of the complexities of their real-life dynamic. Over time, what began as a workplace connection evolved into a decades-long friendship that has continued long after cameras stopped rolling.

As a result, online theories have never really disappeared, particularly speculation surrounding Novak’s relationship with Kaling’s children.

Rather than avoid the topic, Kaling addressed it directly.

“He really is in our family, and I love talking about him because my kids adore him, and he’s such a huge part of our life.”

She also acknowledged why so many people remain curious.

“If I was just watching it from the outside, I would have the same questions and the same reactions.”

It was a refreshingly self-aware answer — one that neither fuels speculation nor dismisses why audiences have become invested in their story over the years.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kaling also reflected on another subject that’s generated headlines recently: her weight loss journey.

Rather than frame it around appearance, she explained that her priorities have shifted significantly.

“When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons. Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes. I had it on both sides of my family, and trying to avoid those kinds of things will, I think, help longevity for me, and that’s my goal.”

She also acknowledged the experience of having those changes scrutinized publicly.

“Of course, it’s never a joy to be scrutinized, but also I truly understand it, as someone who consumes pop culture.”
