Taylor Swift is taking fans on a nostalgic journey — and straight back to her country music beginnings.

The global superstar has officially released “I Knew It, I Knew You,” an original song featured on the soundtrack for the highly anticipated upcoming film Toy Story 5. The track marks a notable stylistic shift for Swift, embracing the heartfelt storytelling and country influences that first launched her career while also serving as an emotional companion piece to one of Pixar’s most beloved characters, Jessie the cowgirl.

The song was first announced earlier this week and arrives with an impressive pedigree. Swift co-wrote and co-produced the track alongside longtime creative partner Jack Antonoff. According to the filmmakers, the song was specifically inspired by Jessie’s continuing journey in the fifth installment of the beloved franchise.

For Toy Story 5 writer and director Andrew Stanton, bringing Swift into the Pixar universe felt like a natural fit.

“It’s incredible just how meaningful it’s been having Taylor write and perform this song. Her connection to Jessie and the immediate way she understood what the character was going through was undeniable. The song is so deeply connected to Toy Story. So much so that on first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet.”

The emotional ballad explores themes of friendship, reunion, memory, and enduring love — all central themes that have defined the Toy Story franchise for nearly three decades. While the lyrics are open to interpretation, many listeners have already pointed to the song’s themes of reconnecting with someone after years apart as perfectly aligned with Jessie’s emotional arc.

Following the song’s release across streaming platforms, Swift shared a heartfelt message on Instagram reflecting on the experience of creating music for one of her childhood favorites.

“Writing this song felt like a musical departure and coming home at the same time. Creating something for Jessie was a new challenge and also felt like second nature all at once. And being a @toystory kid from the age of 5 til now… is an adventure I plan to be on, to infinity and beyond,” she wrote.

Swift also took a moment to thank Stanton for bringing her into the project.

“Thank you to the brilliant Andrew Stanton for imagining me for this, all those years ago when you wrote this newest film. Thank you to the incomparable @randynewmanofficial for the gorgeous sonic tapestry of songs and scores you’ve meticulously woven over the years. You created the Toy Story musical world, and we are lucky to get to live in it.”

The singer then revealed just how personal the project became for both her and Antonoff.

“By we, I mean myself and my pal @jackantonoff. We wrote this with so much adoration for these characters that made us laugh and helped us learn lessons and think outside the backyard all throughout our childhoods. ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’ from Toy Story 5 is out everywhere now.”

The release is already generating significant buzz among both Swifties and Disney fans, with many praising the song’s warm, nostalgic tone and classic storytelling approach. For listeners who have followed Swift’s evolution from Nashville prodigy to global pop icon, the track offers a reminder of the lyrical style that first made her a household name.

At the same time, it adds a new emotional layer to a franchise built on friendship, loyalty, and growing up.

As anticipation continues to build for Toy Story 5, “I Knew It, I Knew You” gives audiences their first glimpse into the heart of the film. If the song is any indication, Pixar may have another tearjerker on its hands.

One thing is certain: Taylor Swift and Jessie make a surprisingly perfect match.

[Verse 1]
I knew you through the daze of the blades of the grass in summer
Parachutes for the free fall of being younger
I memorized the sound of your bare footsteps
Running wild, it’s been a long time
Life has ways of leaving those days behind
But seeing you tonight

[Chorus]
I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered, I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you
I knew it, I knew you

[Verse 2]
I knew you, all your blues like a mood ring changing colors
You did too, there were times we could fight like brothers
I watched you drive around the bend for
What I thought would be the last time I saw my friend
But love has ways of bringing things back to life
All you said was, “Hi”

[Chorus]
And I remembered I loved you
Came back when it mattered, I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)

[Post-Chorus]
I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)
I knew it, I knew you (I knew, I knew)

[Bridge]
Oh
The rivers I cried when we said goodbye
Wondering if I’d made it up in my mind
But now you look me in the eye

[Chorus]
And you told me I loved you
Came back when it mattered, I saw you
Standing there in the light of the window wearing that same smile
Yeah, it’s been a while, oh-oh
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while (Man, it’s been a while)
Wearing that same smile
Man, it’s been a while
But I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you, I knew)

[Post-Chorus]
I knew it, I knew you
Wearing that same smile (Ooh, I knew you, I knew)
I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you, I knew)
I knew it, I knew you (Ooh, I knew you, I knew)
I knew it
