The fine line between extreme method acting and professional boundaries can occasionally lead to explosive moments on a movie set. Appearing on the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast on Monday (August 3), actor Scott Eastwood reflected on his experience filming the 2014 David Ayer World War II drama Fury, detailing a fiery confrontation with co-star Shia LaBeouf.
Reflecting on the tense atmosphere on set, Eastwood didn’t hold back when describing LaBeouf’s intense approach to his craft. “Look, Shia is clearly tormented and has maybe got some stuff going on. It was tough,” Eastwood told host Dax Shepard.
The friction reached a boiling point during an exchange inside a military tank vehicle. “One day, he was having an episode and thought I shouldn’t be spitting tobacco on the tank… which was in the script….and then I finally said enough is enough,” Eastwood recalled.
Refusing to back down from the confrontation, Eastwood stood his ground. “I said, ‘F—k you. Stop pulling your s—t.’ I said, ‘I’m gonna whoop your a*s,’” he shared.
According to Eastwood, it was their high-profile co-star Brad Pitt who stepped in to diffuse the volatile situation before physical blows were exchanged.
Eastwood also noted the extreme lengths LaBeouf went to in order to immerse himself in the wartime character, including voluntarily having one of his own teeth pulled out prior to filming. “And I remember thinking, ‘Okay. This guy’s crazy. I’m just gonna keep clear from this guy. I don’t play this game,’” Eastwood shared regarding his decision to maintain a firm distance for the remainder of production.
Offering a blunt summary of the lesson he took away from the experience, Eastwood concluded with a candid critique of Hollywood’s eccentricities: “Grow the f—k up. It’s funny. The film industry attracts psychopaths because it’s art and business and they kind of intersect.”
